In preparation for his caricatures, Daumier made a series of small-scale portrait busts of parliamentarians and people from judicial circles in unbaked clay, coloured with paint. Assignments from Charles Philipon (1832-1835), the founder of La Caricature and Charivari, motivated Daumier. Today, the small sculptures can be seen at Musée Orsay in Paris.
